The Sauer Sundstrand Company recently occupied their new facility in Lawrence, Kanas. A stunning 157,000 square foot manufacturing facility that George Charbonneau, Sauer’s plant engineer, said sometimes looks more like “an operating room” than a manufacturing plant. Rietz Consultants, Ltd. worked with the design/build team from Story Construction Company to complete the design and construction in less than one year. The facility features a two-story, 20,000 square foot office area with a pair of glass curtain walls on the exterior of the building and facing the plant manufacturing floor. The structure is composed of conventional steel framing and load-bearing insulated precast sandwich walls on spread foundations. Structural challenges included three interior bridge cranes, and design for future expansion.
